Oh Twickenham! Perhaps no other neighborhood combines grandeur and charm so perfectly. The namesake of Twickenham hails from the early name of Huntsville and is the first historic district designated in town. The lovely tree lined streets features homes in Federal and Greek Revival architectural styles. Many homes in the district have been restored and renovated to add size while keeping within the historic qualities and attributes of the town and neighborhood. Each home is distinctly different, with each being painstakingly manicured. The street signs in Twickenham are designated with a tree identifying the district.
Early merchants, bankers and attorneys built fashionable impressive town homes, many of which were seized during the Civil War in 1862-1865 by the Union Army. Thus, the Twickenham Historic District has the state’s largest collection of pre-Civil War homes.
